Twisted Classics Jam

To celebrate the launch of Hungry Hollow, and leading into the launch of the Deluxe Edition, we will be hosting a LH Twisted Classics Jam on itch.io. The jam launch page should go live in April, with an opening date aligning to the launch of Hungry Hollow (early May)

What is a Twisted Classic?

The Liminal Horror Twisted Classics line are ground up reimaginings of classic adventures. Instead of a direct conversion, we take inspiration from some of the core elements of these older adventures and add a variety of twists to bring them into the era of modern horror. Now it’s your turn.

We want to see your take on what a Twisted Classic could be. These can be full adventures, monsters, settings, NPCs, supplemental rules, artifacts, art, etc. Anything that breathes new life into an idea or story. But don’t feel constrained by the classic adventures either. Your source of inspiration could very well be a classic novel, video game, or movie. Anything you think is deserving of being transformed and given new life at the table.

But also, if you have something for Liminal Horror that didn’t make it into the last jam that you don’t think quite fits the theme, feel free to toss it on in here anyway.

Touchstones

For some examples of these ideas in practice, check out the following.

Discord Community

We have a small but growing discord server for Liminal Horror that is worth popping into, especially if you are interested in the Jam.

Liminal Horror Deluxe Edition

The LH team is hard at work drafting the manuscript for the Deluxe Edition as we await edits for Hungry Hollow. The aim is to launch have the kickstarter at the end of summer.

Zach’s Cover - In Process

Zach Hazard is the art director for the Liminal Horror Deluxe Edition and will be doing art throughout. Given that his work has defined the system since the beginning, it was only fitting that he join the team as a creative lead. Zach is currently working on a cover for that both evokes the original and pushes it into something new.

Manuscript Progress

Josh Domanski and I have been spending March really digging into the main manuscript for the Deluxe Edition. Progress has been going well, as both the lore aspects and the Facilitator Tools have taken shape. In an upcoming newsletter we’ll dive deep into the text and look at what is throughout.

Currently we have:

  • Investigator’s Guide (the player facing rules) almost completely drafted and edited. This includes new Fallouts and Magic rules.
  • Facilitator’s Guide (a toolkit for running the game)
    • Principles for Facilitators - drafted.
    • Running an Investigation - drafted.
    • Creating a Mystery - in progress.
    • Adapting a Mystery - drafted. This includes conversion notes for Into the Odds, B/X Derivatives, MÖRK BORG, Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, Monster of the Week, Mothership, Triangle Agency.
  • Catalog of the Strange (our take on a modern horror bestiary) - drafted.
    • Factions - 4 of the 6 have been drafted.
    • Horrors (8 types of “monsters” with examples)- drafted.
    • Resonant Artifacts (30 new and 10 returning objects of power) - drafted.
    • Allies and Adversaries (20 NPCs who can either help or hinder the Investigators, and have connections to the Factions, Horrors, and RAs) - drafted.
  • The Haunted Pacific Northwest (a setting guide) - in progress.
    • Including multiple location hubs that have an overview/places of interests/key NPCS/investigative threads for each.
    • Starting Adventure
  • Appendices (that include optional rules, supplements, and references) - 75% drafted.
    • Completed appendices: Conditions, Item Tags, Luck, Flashbacks, Funnel Rules, Survival Horror, Tactical Combat, Expanded Vehicles, Brands, Legacy Resonant Artifacts, Legacy Fallouts.
    • In process: Investigation Kits, Associates, NPCs, Strange Happenings.

Catalog of the Strange: Horrors

One thing that the Deluxe Edition has really allowed us to do is take the time to really explore how the terrible things that happen in the modules interact with each other. One key aspect of any horror story is the monster that lurks just outside of the frame. For the Deluxe Edition we wanted to present a few different types of Horrors (or monsters) and look at how they interact with different aspects of the system (Resonant Artifacts, Fallout, Magic, other planes, etc).

Since this is still a draft form, any and everythign can change, but we wanted to create a framework of types of Horrors that a monster may fall into. This is by no means the only way to present monsters in Liminal Horror but acts as a base framework to iterate off of. This section of the Catalog of the Strange provides premade monsters who are beings that have drives, flaws, and can be interacted with in ways other than just simple violence. There are eight sections that present different types of monstrous NPCs

  1. Minions: Lesser created beings that serve something more powerful. (draft monsters: Reanimated Dead, Hounds, Infected, Skeletons, Shades, Warped, The Pair, Abominations)
  2. Cultists: Groups of humans that serve a common, terrible, purpose. (draft cults: Knights of Amelioration, Church of the Empty Shell, Order of the All Consuming Sun, Church of the Shattered Moon, Devotes of Bael, The Barrons)
  3. Shapeshiters (The Transformed): Beings that can change their form. (draft shapeshifters: Therianthropic Shapeshifters, Children of Ammon, Doppelgängers, Witches)
  4. The Bound: Once human, their form has been warped and twisted. (draft Bound: Goblins, Living Flame, Invisible Stalkers, The Tainted, The Hive, Orcs, Dark Ones, Possessed Body Part)
  5. Curses: Terrible beings that have found their way into this world. (Draft Curses: Devils, Conduits, Slasher, Worm, Maimed, Hunger, The Rot, The Minotaur, Resonant Monsters - Dimensional Shudders/Dissonant Artifacts/Midshipmen Ghosts, Children of the Void - The Weaver/The Collector, Puppets, False Hydra - Forgetting/Remembering)
  6. Pacts (Warlocks): Beings that gain abilities through a pact with a power being.
  7. Liches: Great and terrible beings that have shed their humanity to become something dreadfully powerful.
  8. Dead Gods: Echoes of great and terrible gods whose influence can still be felt upon this plane.

Hello,

The link to the Discord is indicating it's expired.

here you go!

I'm confused, has the crowdfunding for The Parthenogenesis of Hungry Hollow already happened and the Backerkit for it will be opening in May, or is the Backerkit also the crowdfunding campaign?

the backerkit will be the “crowdfunding” but in essence is going to be more like a preorder store.
